Tasting notes and food pairings for Gran Duc 2019, a structured Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon with dark fruit and cedar. Madeleine on Beaufort, Perth.
Gran Duc 2019 is a Bordeaux red built around Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape behind many of the region's most famous wines. Thick-skinned and structured, Cabernet Sauvignon gives deep colour, firm tannins and the ability to age well.
Deep ruby. The nose offers blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum, followed by the classic Bordeaux notes of cedar, graphite and dried tobacco leaf. Oak ageing adds touches of vanilla, cocoa and baking spice. The palate is full and structured, with ripe tannins and a long finish.
A natural partner for red meat: a dry-aged ribeye, a rack of lamb, or roasted duck breast with a cherry sauce. For cheese, choose mature hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Gouda. And, of course, it is a great match for a generous steak. Ask our team for pairing ideas from the current menu.
Bordeaux, in south-west France along the Gironde estuary, has a temperate climate shaped by the Atlantic Ocean. Its gravelly soils, especially on the Left Bank, store the day's heat and suit late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly, producing wines known for their balance and ageing potential.
2019 is considered an excellent Bordeaux vintage: a hot, dry, sunny summer brought the grapes to full ripeness, while cool nights preserved their freshness. The wines show concentration, velvety tannins and good balance, approachable now and able to age.
AOC Bordeaux, which guarantees the wine's origin and sets rules on grape varieties, yields and production methods.
