Tasting notes and food pairings for Meursault Les Crès 2018 by Jean-Michel Gaunoux, a rich, mineral white Burgundy. Madeleine on Beaufort, Perth.
Domaine Jean-Michel Gaunoux is a respected family estate in Meursault, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. Jean-Michel Gaunoux has run it since 1990, with a traditional, patient approach. Les Crès is a named vineyard site (lieu-dit) in Meursault, and this 2018 is a classic expression of the village's rich yet mineral Chardonnay.
Golden yellow. The nose shows the classic Meursault signature: yellow peach, lemon curd and white blossom, with toasted hazelnut, brioche and a flinty touch. As it warms, notes of butter, beeswax and a little vanilla appear. The palate is generous and creamy, held together by a fresh, stony backbone.
A wine for refined dishes with some richness: seared scallops with a butter sauce, roast chicken with chanterelles and cream, lobster or turbot. Aged Comté or Gruyère are also excellent partners. Our team can suggest a match from the current menu or the seasonal degustation.
Burgundy is the home of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, divided into very precise vineyard sites called climats. Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune, is famous for whites that combine richness and roundness with a lively limestone minerality.
2018 was a warm, sunny and generous vintage in Burgundy, giving ripe, round whites. The grapes are hand-harvested, gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels with natural yeasts, with a limited share of new oak, then aged on fine lees before bottling.
AOC Meursault. Les Crès is a village-level lieu-dit rather than a Premier Cru, and Meursault's named sites are highly valued for their individual character.
